The City of Kalamazoo is proud to make our news available via a RSS feed. An explanation of RSS and how to use it follows below.

What is RSS?
RSS stand for Really Simple Syndication. RSS is an effective way for websites to publish information online. It works by creating XML code that can be read by certain software that is installed on the user's computer. The user simply pastes a URL into their RSS reader, then content is fed directly to the reader. The reader then remembers this location as long as the user wishes to subscribe to it. This way, the user does not have to continually search the web for content they are interested in - the content comes to them. So really, RSS allows a person's computer to fetch and present the information so that all of the sources that a person is interested in can be tracked and personalized for them.

Why Would I Subscribe to RSS?
RSS feeds are a great way to save time! The news you want is automatically delivered to your computer whenever you want. The size of most feeds is small - a title, link or brief synopsis helps you decide whether you want to read more. Clicking on a title opens a browser window to the website that published the feed. In addition, RSS feeds provide a way to receive information without revealing any information about yourself. Since you are not signing up for an email newsletter, there's no possibility of receiving spam or junk email!

How Do I Get RSS?
In order to get Kalamazoo City news automatically delivered to your computer, first you need to install an RSS aggregator. An aggregator simply collects the information from the websites that you're interested in, organizes it and displays it for you to read.

Many popular websites and browsers already feature built-in aggregators, including My Yahoo!, Google, iTunes, Mozilla Firefox and Apple's Safari. If you are not familiar with these applications, you may download a free aggregator at numerous sites. Performing a search for "RSS Feed Readers" in any major search engine such as Google or Yahoo! will product a slew of software options - many of which are free or at little cost.

After you've installed a feed aggregator, just look for the little orange "RSS" or "XML" buttons on your favorite websites. The City website displays RSS buttons in all of the News areas. Click an RSS button to view these directions and the link to our RSS feed. Simply copy the web address and plug it into your aggregator. The software then starts collecting the news automatically for you!
